New to Wake County?
Moving to a new neighborhood?
Be sure to rank your school choices.
If you are new to the Wake County Public School System (as of April 13, 2012), or have moved to a new address (after April 12, 2012) and no longer have transportation to your previous school, you must participate in the selection process to tell us which schools you would prefer your child to attend.
New to Wake County:
- Research your school options ahead of time, based on your address. Then, enroll your child (link) at any school or at WCPSS Central Services, Crossroads I, 5625 Dillard Drive, Cary.
- After enrolling, rank your child’s school choices online or in person at WCPSS Central Services. You’ll need your child's name, birth date, and the NCWISE numbers your child received when enrolling.
- To rank your choices online, click on the button at right, “Newcomer and New Address School Selection”. A new window will open.
- Enter your child's name, birth date and NCWISE number.
- You will see two lists of schools to rank: proximity and magnet. You must rank all of the schools on your proximity list.
- If you wish to apply to a magnet school, please rank those you are interested in. This is in addition to ranking your proximity schools.
- After confirming your rankings, you may close the window, or enter information for another child.
Changing addresses:
- Bring proof of your new address to your child’s school or WCPSS Central Services. Acceptable proof of a new address: a current water, gas or electric bill in your name; a signed purchase contract for a residence with a closing date, or a newly signed lease agreement for a residence.
- Rank your school choices using steps 2 through 6 above.
When can I find out my assignment?
If you selected your schools between May 1 and May 8, your results are now available. Click on the “Newcomer and New Address School Selection” button to view your school assignment. You will need your student's NCWISE number. If you made your selections after May 8, please check back starting May 15. We are continuing to process and post selection results and hope be caught up with the backlog soon.
I'm moving into Wake County and enrolling my child for the remainder of the 2011-12 school year. What do I do?
You will need to enroll your child at his or her base school under the 2011-12 assignment plan, which you can determine by calling the Office of Student Assignment at 919-431-7333. You will then need to request a school assignment for 2012-13 following this Newcomer and New Address School Selection process.
Can I change my selection?
Once you have submitted your choices, you may not revise your selections.
Why didn’t I get my first choice?
Selections are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. If your first-choice school is full, you will be placed on that school’s waiting list. To check your placement on the waitlist, contact the Office of Student Assignment at studentassignment@wcpss.net or call (919) 431-7333 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
How do you use my rankings?
If your first choice school is full, you will receive an assignment to the next school on your list that has space for your child.
What if I want to change schools?
If your resulting school assignment for 2012-13 creates a hardship, you may apply for a transfer. WCPSS grants transfers on a limited basis. To apply, submit a transfer request within ten days of receiving official notification of your assignment. (Families who participated earlier this school year in the 2012-13 magnet and proximity choice rounds have a different transfer request period, between May 15 and June 1.)
Why won’t my username and password work?
The account you created for the school selection process is separate from the account you created earlier this year to participate in magnet and proximity selection rounds.
Who do I call if I need technical help?
For technical help, call the Office of Student Assignment at (919) 431-7333 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
